Many homeowners mistakenly hire people to perform tasks, not knowing they may be responsible for any injury the worker sustains while completing the work. Any time an employer/employee relationship is created, the employer is responsible for injury to the employee if sustained in the course of employment. It's always safe to hire workers who are insured for Workers Compensation individually, or through their employers. Hiring an individual instead of a company to help with grounds keeping, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or other repairs or services, places the homeowner in a perilous position.
We suggest you avoid falling into the trap of "I'll save money by hiring an individual". If that person is injured, your savings may just turn into a large obligation to cover medical expenses, as well as the individual's loss of earnings. In addition, if the inexpensive individual damages or destroys your property, and does not carry General Liability Insurance, you may be facing repair expenses without the ability to recover.
Always require the person you hire to show evidence of Insurance, for not only Workers Compensation, but also General Liability. If you don't, be aware that your savings may evaporate if an injury or damage to your property occurs.
